Our 19th Christmas Reprise brings traditional carols and contemporary Christmas compositions for unaccompanied choir to the resonant spaces of Holy Rosary Cathedral and Queens Avenue United Church. Join us and let the beauty of a cappella singing calm your spirit and transport your soul as the Vancouver Cantata Singers present works including Herbert Howells’ A Spotless Rose, Judith Weir’s My Guardian Angel, and settings of Ave Maria by R. Nathaniel Dett and Franz Biebl.
February 25, 2023 – ANNEX Theatre
Continuing the theme of song, its power of expression and window to the soul, Songbird is an evening of music inspired by the imagery of birds and their song: Love, loss, singing and subsequent silence as night falls over the passing of time. Featuring Brahms’ Fünf Gesänge Op. 104 and a new commissioned arrangement of Fleetwood Mac’s Songbird by Sam Dabrusin, the Vancouver Cantata Singers invite you to join them for an enchanting evening at the ANNEX celebrating songbirds and other animals amidst the forest trees and dreams of Spring.
The Peaceable Kingdom
April 29, 2023 – Pacific Spirit United Church (formerly Ryerson)
Ye Shall Have A Song
Randall Thompson’s extended composition The Peaceable Kingdom, inspired by the Edward Hicks’ painting of the same name, explores themes of good, evil, and peace. Canadian composer Iman Habibi’s Colour of Freedom, reacting to the 2009 “Green Movement” in Iran which saw the death and imprisonment of dozens of Iranian protestors, is a stirring work culminating in a ‘magnificent light’ featuring guest soloist Amir Haghighi. Paired with Mendelssohn’s Verleih uns Frieden and Roxanna Panufnik’s St Aidan’s Prayer, the Vancouver Cantata Singers end their season FORTITUDE: Strength in Song with a thought-provoking concert advocating for peace on our planet through spirituality, humanity, and song.
